Lautaro Dores' work unfolds within a territory of constant cross-pollination between languages. While grounded in a solid draftsmanship structure and classic painting tradition, his work incorporates elements from comic books, illustration, muralism, urban art, and contemporary visual culture. The result is not a mere sum of styles, but a true hybridization of the image, where different eras and technologies coexist on a single surface.
Heavy-impasto oil plays a central role in this exploration. Materiality does not serve solely to represent a figure; it asserts its own presence. Brushstrokes, thickness, layering, and physical gesture construct a tactile surface that retains the trace of the artist’s physical movement. Dores himself has noted that he is particularly drawn to the “sensual nature of working with physical material,” viewing models and techniques as tools to arrive at the essence of painting itself.
His figurative expressionism takes the recognizable figure as a starting point while steering clear of strictly descriptive representation. Faces, bodies, and characters emerge shaped by distortions, chromatic tensions, and intensified gestures. Thus, the figure ceases to be a mere represented object and becomes a vessel for emotional states, memory, identity, and the urban experience. Art critics covering his work have highlighted precisely this use of expressive distortion and vibrant chromatic accents.
Added to this is a Pop dimension rooted in his early background with comics and graphic design. Dores acknowledges drawing from comic books, action painting, and Pop art, while keeping Expressionism as his constant thread. Consequently, his visual language retains key elements of comic art’s graphic synthesis: bold contours, fragmentation, high-impact color, recognizable characters, and an immediate visual connection.
